Why I Write

Every human person is inevitably involved with two worlds: the world they carry within them and the world that is out there. All thinking, all writing, all action, all creation and all destruction is about that bridge between the two worlds.

- John O’Donohue (Walking in Wonder)

My first experience with writing started at school. But the goal of writing in school was to get grades although this was not the only intention of the teacher. So my motivation for writing at school was not exciting other than getting grades. When my motivation is minimal then I do not find the joy of writing outside of the classroom.

Now I am in a different school, a school of life and it’s teaching me different what writing is about. Writing is an effort to make sense of the world around me and the world within me. Through this inner struggle I come to terms with the two worlds. I am building a bridge between the two worlds so that I can cross them. Once I have completed this bridge, it means that I have come to understand.

What is the goal of building such bridges? What is the goal of understanding?

Peace. And being a peaceful person is what I would want for myself so I now have a different view of what writing is.

I write to be a peaceful person and this is a paradigm shift. No teacher has taught writing to be find peace.

So writing is about understanding myself and the world. Writing is building that bridge. Without this bridge, I am lost and disengaged which would make me less peaceful.

So I make the effort to write everyday to discover peace and this is worth my time.
